How to Apply for Financial Aid

Step 1: Apply early each year - after January and preferably before March 15th, using the Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA).

If this is your first time applying, you will be instructed to apply for a Personal Identification Number so that you can electronically "sign" your FAFSA. Use the Saint Leo Federal School code of 001526.

Step 2: You will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) generally within 3 - 5 days of filing.

In order to receive financial aid, you must be admitted into a degree seeking program. For questions about your degree status, contact the admission office where you are attending.

Review the SAR for accuracy. If you need to make changes you can either go online or call 1 (800) 240-7658. If the SAR indicates that your file is selected for verification, you will need to complete the year specific verification worksheet.

In addition, you will need to submit signed tax returns.*

If you are:

  • Single and Independent, submit a signed copy of your tax return.

  • Single and Dependent, submit a signed copy of your and your parent(s) tax return.

  • Married, submit a signed copy of your and your spouse's tax return.

*If your application is selected for verification for the 2007-2008 academic year, submit 2006 tax returns.

Viewing your financial aid file: If you have access to Elion, you can check "My documents" to view what documents have been received and what is being requested.

Step 3: Notification and Acceptance of Award

The Student Financial Services Office will review your application for all available aid you are eligible for.

New!: You can view your award and accept your loan amount(s) on Elion. Simply browse to the Elion page and choose either the Change/reduce loan amount option or the Accept loan amount option. We will be immediately notified.

The Student Financial Services will send you two copies of the Financial Aid Award Letter. This letter shows the amount of financial aid that you are eligible to receive for the terms that you are enrolled.

If you do not have Elion access, simply sign and return one copy of the award letter to the Office of Student Financial Services if you are applying for a Federal Stafford Loan

Students who have never borrowed a Federal Stafford Loan before must complete an entrance interview. The entrance interview explains your rights and your responsibilities of borrowing through the student loan program. Go to the following web site to complete the entrance interview:

    http://mapping-your-future.org

The Office of Student Financial Services is electronically notified when you have completed the entrance interview. We can then certify your Federal Stafford Loan eligibility.

    Financial Aid Award Revision

Your original financial aid award may be changed if your financial need changes, if you receive additional financial aid or if you are no longer eligible for a financial aid award. When a private, outside scholarship has been received, the Office of Student Financial Services will attempt to replace unmet need, educational loans or work programs before reducing any grant or scholarship assistance.

    Step 4: Receiving your aid:

If your financial aid is awarded prior to the start of term and your aid is scheduled to be disbursed for that term, it is generally disbursed to your tuition account within 12 days from the start of the term. If that creates a credit balance, you will generally receive a check within 14 days from the date the credit balance was created.
