The English and Math Placement Exams are designed to gauge your aptitude and skill level in the given subject areas. Saint Leo University wants students to succeed in their academic pursuit. By accurately placing students in the appropriate courses, Saint Leo University is assisting in the achievement of that goal. College work requires a certain proficiency in English and Math necessary for further study in higher level courses. The placement exam process is critical in determining your abilities and knowledge. Each student is only permitted to take each exam only once.
- Students are encouraged to complete placement exams as soon as possible in order to secure their enrollment for the next term and to avoid late registration fees.
- Students who have transfer credit for ENG 121 and MAT 131 are not required to take placement exams.
- Students in possession of a Program Outline that reflects the transfer of ENG121 and/or MAT128 will not be subject to foundational courses.
- Completion of the admission package is the first step in the official transfer credit evaluation process. Once a student receives proof by the Registrar's Office of transfer credit (Program Outline) the student must email the Program Outline to his/her Saint Leo University Academic Advisor in order to waive placement exam results.
The English Placement Exam consists of writing an original essay that must be completed within 45 minutes.
The Math Placement exam consists of 20 for Placement Test 1 and 24 questions for Placement Test 2 questions that must be completed within one hour. Additional exams may follow for qualified students. Students please remember to put your student ID and not your email address on each exam you are taking.
Placement Exam Results
Students are notified immediately of their results. Students who pass the ENG placement exam will be placed in ENG121. MAT placement exam results will dictate course placement in MAT131, MAT141 or MAT201. MAT students may enroll in any MAT course below the level of placement. Note: Maximum of 2 courses allowed during any session student is enrolled in a prep course (including the MAT 003 or ENG 002 course).

Foundational Courses (MAT003 and ENG002)
Foundational courses are non-credit courses. (Foundational courses DO count as 3 semester hours each for financial aid purposes.) If students are required to take a Foundational Course, it is recommended that students enroll in at least one foundational course for the semester following SLU Strategies Course.
Students who need both MAT003 and ENG002, but do not want to enroll in both at the same time, may enroll in one foundational course at a time, beginning in the semester immediately following SLU Strategies Course and finishing in the subsequent semester. Foundational courses do not count toward the 4-class limit prior to matriculation. However, Foundational courses DO count as 3 semester hours each for financial aid purposes.
