COM 130 and COM 140 Waiver Exam Academic Policy

Only students who are extremely proficient in the content of COM 130 or COM 140 should attempt this exam (Word, Excel, Access (COM 140 only), PowerPoint, Windows/Internet). Students are ineligible to take the exam if they have received a grade of W or F in the course at Saint Leo. The exam is Pass/Fail and you must receive a minimum score of 60% to pass. If you receive a passing score, you are exempt from taking the course. However, you will not receive credit for the course. Additionally, you are required to replace those 3 credits by completing another course at Saint Leo or by using transfer credits. If you receive a score below 60%, you are required to enroll in the course. There is no charge for the test.

Waiver Testing Information

The Waiver Exam tests your knowledge of Word, Excel, Access (COM 140 only), PowerPoint and Windows/Internet. Any student can take the COM140 Waiver Exam. Since it is a super set of the COM130 Waiver Exam, it covers both. Business students and those who think they will be taking a business major must take this exam or the course itself. The COM130 Waiver exam is for non-business students. Should a student take the COM130 Waiver Exam and later realize he wants to major in business, with the addition of the Access 2003 and Access 2007 Waiver Exams, all the student has to do is take and pass one of these tests to meet the qualifications for COM140. The student has to decide whether he wants to take the Office 2003 Waiver Exam or the Office 2007 Waiver Exam. If he picks one, takes it and fails, he does not get to try the other. The policy is very clear: barring some clear system malfunction, certified personal situation, or something clearly wrong, students get one and only one attempt to take the test. Should the student fail to log in and take the test during one term, he can try again in another term but should he log in and try the test and quit, he cannot do it again.
